Your price depends on how many teeth actually need crowning, whether anything has to be treated first, and the length of your trip. We do not publish a single figure, because quoting a number before we have seen your photos and x-rays would be guesswork. You receive one written all-inclusive quote after your assessment, usually within 24 hours, and it does not change once agreed.

It depends on how much sound tooth you still have. A veneer is a thin facing bonded to the front of a tooth, so it needs a healthy tooth underneath and it only changes what you see from the front — right for teeth that are sound but the wrong shape or shade. A crown covers the whole tooth, so it is the option when the tooth is worn down, chipped, root-treated, heavily filled or dark all the way through. Our dentists will tell you if veneers are enough, and we prepare only the teeth that need it.

A metal-ceramic crown is porcelain fired over a metal core. It is strong and long established, but the metal blocks light, so the crown looks flatter than a natural tooth, and a grey line can appear at the gum if the gum recedes over the years. Zirconia is metal-free, so light passes through it more like enamel and there is no dark margin to worry about. Metal-ceramic still has a place, and cost matters to some patients — your dentist will say plainly which one suits the tooth in question rather than defaulting to the more expensive option.

Monolithic crowns are milled from a single block of zirconia, which makes them the strongest option — the usual choice for molars and for patients who grind. Layered crowns have ceramic hand-built over a zirconia core, which gives more depth and translucency for front teeth but adds a surface layer that can chip under heavy load. Many plans use both: layered at the smile line, monolithic at the back. Your dentist chooses per tooth and it is written into your plan.

Monolithic zirconia is routinely used on molars, where the chewing load is highest, and it is a common choice for teeth that have been root-treated and have become brittle. The bite is checked and adjusted at fitting, because a crown left even slightly high is the usual cause of soreness afterwards.

Enough to make room for the crown and no more — a crown needs a defined thickness of material all round to be strong, so more is removed than for a veneer. Where the tooth is already worn, broken down or heavily filled, much of what would be reduced has usually gone already. Your dentist shows you on the 3D scan what will be prepared before you agree to it, and nothing is drilled until you have.

The shade is chosen with you, against your own teeth, in daylight rather than under a surgery lamp — and again at the try-in appointment, before anything is cemented. If you are crowning only some teeth, the target is a match with the teeth either side; if you are crowning the whole smile line you can choose a lighter shade. Very white is not always the natural-looking answer, and we will say so, but the choice is yours and it is confirmed before the crowns are finished.

That depends on the margin — where the edge of the crown meets the tooth — and on how you clean afterwards. A well-fitting margin, placed at or just under the gum line, lets the gum sit against the crown without inflammation. Any gum disease is treated before crowns are made, because crowning over inflamed gums stores up a problem. At home the crowns need the same brushing and daily interdental cleaning as natural teeth, plus a hygienist visit twice a year.

Zirconia is a durable material and crowns commonly last many years, but a crown fails at its edges and at the tooth underneath, not usually in the material itself — so the honest answer is that lifespan depends on your gums, your cleaning and your bite rather than on a number we could print. Brush twice daily, clean between the teeth every day, keep your check-ups, and wear a night guard if you grind. Your written plan sets out the guarantee that comes with your work.

Yes, and it is important you tell us — grinding is one of the main reasons crown work fails early. Your dentist will normally choose monolithic zirconia for its strength, adjust the bite carefully, and make you a night guard to wear while you sleep. Where grinding is heavy, the night guard is written into your plan alongside the crowns.

Plan for 5 to 7 nights for a course of crowns, across four visits to the hospital dental unit — examination, preparation, try-in, then cementation — with the laboratory work in between. A larger case, or one that needs root treatment or extractions first, may need longer. Your exact schedule is confirmed in your written plan before you book a flight, and you should not fly home until your dentist has signed off at the final check.

Preparation is done under local anaesthetic, so you should feel pressure rather than pain, and sedation is available inside the hospital if you are anxious. Some tenderness and sensitivity to hot and cold for a few days afterwards is normal while the gums settle.
